What a product configurator is (and CPQ)
A product configurator is an on-site tool where the customer assembles a product from available options (dimensions, variants, accessories) and immediately sees a coherent specification. The system keeps the chosen options compatible and prevents configurations that cannot be manufactured.
When you add pricing rules and quote generation, it becomes CPQ (Configure, Price, Quote) — a standard category of sales software. The goal is the same: shorten the path from "I want something like this" to "I have a priced, correct specification".
A configurator does not have to show a hard price. In many industrial sectors price depends on volume and negotiation, so the tool collects a complete specification and passes it on as a high-value request for quote. That is often a smarter first step than full CPQ with a price list.

Types of configurators
- Variant (simple) — the customer picks from ready options (color, size, accessories). Fastest to deploy.
- Parametric — the customer enters dimensions and parameters, and the system computes valid combinations and validates them. For made-to-measure products.
- Visual / 3D — the customer sees the product in 3D and assembles it visually, often ending with a sheet or certificate. The most engaging, the most expensive.
Good practice is to start with the variant that removes the biggest friction (usually parametric, or an advisor leading to the right product) and add 3D where it genuinely helps the decision.
